Whether you're camping, travelling, or just wanting a hot cup during a long hike or beach day, you should still be able to enjoy a good coffee on-the-go. With the right tools and a little know-how, you can make your favourite coffees just as well outdoors.
Pick the right brewing equipment
Not all coffee equipment is created equal when it comes to portability. These are a few travel-friendly favourites:
· Travel Aeropress : The perfect accessory for brewing a smooth and robust espresso-like coffee on-the-go. Plus the travel version comes with a microwavable mug and lid that doubles up as a travelling case for ultimate convenience.
· Minipresso : Light and compact in size, the Minipresso GR2 is an innovative gadget that produces exceptional in-cup espresso coffee with only a few pumps.
Make sure to also bring a sturdy reusable cup like the Huskee cup to drink your freshly brewed coffee.
Use Freshly Ground Coffee
We always recommend grinding your beans just before you brew for ultimate freshness. You can use a Izpresso Q hand grinder to keep your setup compact and not rely on electricity.
Pre-grinding can be fine for short trips, but ground coffee begins to lose flavour quickly so it's best to keep it in an airtight container whilst you travel.
Use Quality Water
Remember, your coffee is mainly made up of water so using poor quality water will affect its flavour quite a lot. As you may not have access to quality water whilst out and about, bring filtered water with you or use a portable water filter before brewing.
Boil Your Water Properly
For outdoor brewing, a compact stove or a kettle over a campfire will boil water quickly. Make sure you bring your water just off a boil (93°C) for the best extraction. If your water is too cool, your coffee will be under-extracted and weak, and if it’s too hot, it will be over-extracted and bitter.
Practice at Home First
The middle of a windy path or early morning on a busy campsite probably isn't the best place to experiment with your brewing method. Try your outdoor coffee routine at home before your trip. Dial in your recipe, ratios and timing at head of time.
So the next time you’re planning a outdoorsy trip, don’t just settle for an instant coffee, pack your coffee equipment and have a go at brewing a proper cup in the wild.
