It’s B Corp Month and we’re celebrating using business as a force for good – for people and the planet. And we’ve got big B Corp news this year. We've improved our B Corp score from 84.7 to 93.1. So as a thanks to our customers who have supported and helped us achieve a better score, we’ve got lots of activities planned for March.
But first, how did we improve our score?
We improved our score across all areas of the B Corp values but over 50% of our increased score came from changes to our environmental practices.
We implemented various new practices that included but aren’t limited to:
- Utilizing electric vans and powering our warehouse with 100% renewable energy.
- Opting for compostable or recycled packaging and reducing excess packaging.
- Increasing our recycling rate from production via First Mile.
- Focusing on sourcing raw materials with lower environmental impacts, in particular by buying more of our coffee from our green partners, Fazenda Mio and supporting The Sombra Project.
- Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by transitioning to more efficient equipment, production process optimizations and investing more in our carbon offset project. Learn more about this project here.
- Not only have we addressed carbon emissions from our direct operations but from suppliers and partners as well, setting formal climate targets across our whole supply chain.
We also made a number of changes to our community and workers practices:
- Stronger commitment to sourcing from and supporting local business owners to help boost local economies and foster community ties.
- Increased donations to supply chain partners and strengthened partnerships with Crisis charity, Best of Congo and the Rebuild Women's Hope cooperative in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- More commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion with the implementation of a formal supplier diversity program and increasing leadership roles for women, within our company and our suppliers.
- Enhancing the benefit plan for our employees to improve employee satisfaction and financial security.
