Not Decaf, Not a Compromise: The Rise of Naturally Low Caffeine Coffee

Coffee is often framed as a choice between two extremes: full caffeine or decaf. But another category is quietly redefining speciality coffee, naturally low-caffeine coffee. Not as a substitute, and certainly not as a compromise, but as an evolution in how and when we can enjoy coffee.

Why Low-Caffeine Coffee Exists

If decaf and full-caffeine coffee already exist, why does low-caffeine matter?

The answer is simple: low-caffeine coffee isn’t about limitation, it’s about extension. It’s for the second cup, the post-lunch flat white, the late afternoon pause. Rather than cutting back, it allows you to enjoy coffee throughout the day without sacrificing sleep, comfort or clarity.

For a long time, coffee rituals have been seen as about chasing caffeine kicks for faster mornings. Now, we’re seeing a shift. Not away from coffee consumption, but towards consuming with intention. People want coffee that fits their whole day, not just the first hour of it. That’s where naturally low-caffeine coffees come in.

We’ve been trained to think of coffee as either a guilty pleasure or just a caffeine kick. But the truth is, coffee is one of the most powerful health foods in the Western diet. From heart and liver protection to sharper brains and longer lives, coffee is one of the most underrated health allies you’ve got. Lower-caffeine options make it easier to enjoy those benefits throughout the day. Learn more about it on our blog about the health benefits of coffee.

Naturally Low Caffeine. Full Flavour

Low-caffeine coffees are not decaf substitutes, nor are they a compromise between regular and decaf. They’re simply coffees designed differently from the start.

Naturally low-caffeine varietals, like Aramosa, contain less caffeine, around 0.7–0.8%, roughly half that of most Arabica coffees. No caffeine is removed and no processing is used to strip flavour away. By using a naturally low caffeine varietals, the flavour of the coffee is preserved rather than altered.

Our January Roaster’s Choice

Our January Roaster’s Choice, Inacio Urban, comes from the Urban family in Minas Gerais, Brazil, a two-generation farm working with the Aramosa variety. The coffee is hand-picked, undergoes a 36-hour aerobic fermentation, and is then sun-dried for 15 days.

The result is a cup that’s rich, smooth and sweet. Expect notes of milk chocolate, honey, and golden raisin. This isn’t a “lighter” coffee, it’s just a more considered one.

Our Roaster’s Choice exists to spotlight coffees that make us think differently about what great coffee can be. Naturally low-caffeine coffee does exactly that.

Low-caffeine coffee isn’t about drinking less. It’s about having more options and more moments to enjoy your coffee rituals.
