How to make the perfect affogato

Affogato, meaning "drowned" in Italian, is a simple yet indulgent dessert of hot espresso (and a splash of liqueur if you’re looking for an adult version) poured over ice cream. The real delight of an affogato lies in the contrast of temperatures—the hot, intense espresso melts the cold ice cream to create something truly delicious.

This dessert is as easy as it gets – only two ingredients and it takes no more than 5 minutes to prepare. What’s not to love?

Ingredients:

  • 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream (or try using pistachio ice cream for added indulgence)
  • 1 shot of espresso (we recommend Fullsteam Espresso)
  • A splash of Amaretto (optional)

Method:

  1. Brew a fresh shot of espresso using your espresso machine or moka pot.
  2. Place 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream into a serving glass. Pro tip – chill the glass beforehand so your ice cream doesn’t melt as quickly.
  3. Just before serving pour the hot espresso shot (and the amaretto) directly over the ice cream.

Serve the affogato immediately so the espresso is still hot and the ice cream is not yet melted. Enjoy!
