ROASTER’S CHOICE MARCH 2023
ISHURWE - BURUNDI

In March as we celebrate International Women’s Day, we wanted to showcase a coffee from female growers and we have picked a special one from the Ishurwe Women’s Group at the Izuba Washing station, Burundi, sourced from our good friends at Raw Material. “Izuba” meaning “sun” in Kirundi, is located in Runinya, Kayanza Province. Izuba is situated near to the Kibira national park, where the soil and climate are paired well for fantastic coffee production. The washing station is nearby to a river, providing vital and regular freshwater for coffee processing.

Here the premiums at the station are provided to not only the farmers but the station staff also. Employees are paid 25% higher than other local washing stations and 22% more than the national average salary. Producers then get paid for the coffee cherries on two set payments a year.

This coffee is true of a classic washed Burundi – expect citrus and berry with a black tea-like finish, best drunk black or will make a fruitier milky coffee.

CONTAINS:

    • 500g or 1kg coffee every month, hand-selected by Nick and roasted by Claire
    • Information card about the coffee
