ROASTER’S CHOICE NOVEMBER 2023

GITEGA HILLS, RWANDA

    • Origin: Rwanda
    • Region: Gitega cell, Cyanika sector
    • Varietal: Red Bourbon
    • Process: Washed

This month’s Roaster’s Choice comes from Gitega Hills, located 12km from Bwenda in the Cyanika sector, is a coffee processing station covering approximately 6 hectares near the town of Miko. Gitega is part of the larger land cell of the same name.

Established in 2016, all the station’s staff are members of the local community, and Gitega is seen as a valuable contributor to the area. Gitega employs 150 individuals, with 11 on a permanent basis and the remainder as seasonal workers, 90% of whom are women.

The station sources coffee cherries from 1040 local farmers, whose farms are situated within a 0.5km to 7km radius and are served by 33 different cherry collection points. On average, these farmers cultivate around 400 coffee trees (equivalent to 1 hectare). Gitega also provides farmers with an organic compost, a blend of recycled cherry pulp and animal manure.

This Rwandan coffee offers sweet toffee notes with a cranberry tang, and zesty orange rind, best enjoyed as a filter coffee.

    CONTAINS:

      • 500g or 1kg coffee every month, hand-selected by Nick and roasted by Claire
      • Information card about the coffee
