The Sombra Project
Sombra is an agroforestry project, established by our esteemed green coffee partner Fazenda Mio and funded every time you drink our delicious coffee.
Brazil accounts for over 40% of the global arabica coffee volume. Such a significant portion of the world crop means that Brazil’s crop each year defines the global market.
Catastrophic frosts in the last 50 years have destroyed roughly half of Brazil's coffee trees, leaving Brazil's wildlife and the world's coffee industry vulnerable.
Sombra, meaning "shade" in Portuguese is an important agroforestry project in Brazil between Volcano Coffee Works, Fazenda Mio and the Instituto Federal Espirito Santo.
Sombra aims to reconfigure the conventional full-sun production system to bring “sombra” to coffee plantations. It is a 5 year experimental shaded-growing model in a 15-hectare plot area at Mió land, to be populated with over 60,000 trees and coffee plants. The focus is developing a highly sustainable and integrated management of different plant species to protect the area from threatening weather conditions, recover soil health and improve yield from the area.
As well as being on the ground, helping plant the trees, we are helping fund the project. We are paying premiums on all coffee bought from Mio to support the Sombra project.
So the more we sell the more we support the project.
Awaken your senses with a cup that's rich and a little bit fruity. Our single-origin Brazilian espresso, Sombra has notes of plum, hazelnut, dark chocolate and toffee in milk.
With every bag of coffee you buy, you are helping support the Sombra project.
