What do we mean when we say compostable?

Our Eco Coffee Pods are 100% home compostable.

Coffee pod technology has made drinking great coffee at home even easier. Over  300,000,000 cups  were made  with pod machines in the UK last year, but did you know nearly 95% of these  aluminium and plastic pods ended up straight in landfill? Your coffee pods  can take over 500  years to break down if you just throw them in the bin. We  have something better.... Our pods  not only have a long shelf life, but will also break down into nutrient-rich fertiliser in just 90 days. All you have to do is place them in your food-waste bin after use. Our coffee pods offer an environmentally friendly solution without losing the quality of our coffee.

Why is composting important?

Composting food waste and biodegradable materials, as opposed to leaving them in landfill, is the most environmentally sustainable solution to waste disposal. Composting crucially reduces the amount of potent methane gas that is released into the atmosphere and toxic residue in the ground, as well as producing nitrogen-rich natural fertilisers as a by-product.

If you see the term 'compostable' on packaging this means that the materials have been certified to break down completely into non-toxic components (water, carbon dioxide, and biomass) given the right conditions.

What are Volcano's Eco Coffee pods made of?

The capsules, lids and bag packaging we use are made of a plant-based cornstarch bio-plastic. This material guarantees our pods an unlimited shelf life while preserving the exceptional taste of our award-winning coffee, and after use can be home-composted with your food waste.

Our pods have been designed with a compostable, oxygen barrier and non-tearable filter lid to ensure the best results from our coffee. So you'll still get that thick crema in your coffee.

What are home compostable coffee pods?

Home compostable coffee pods are a sustainable alternative to traditional coffee pods that are not biodegradable (such as aluminium).

Our pods are made from plant-based materials that can break down naturally in a home composting environment, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

At Volcano Coffee Works, we offer home compostable coffee pods for our customers who want to enjoy our speciality coffee without compromising on sustainability. By choosing home compostable coffee pods, you can help to reduce your environmental impact and enjoy your coffee guilt-free.

How do I compost the pods?

The pods are “OK Compost Home” certified and will decompose within 180 days at ambient temperature – quicker than an orange peel! Just pop it in your home garden compost and watch it decompose. If you don’t have access to a home compost bin, just pop it in your general waste bin – this is still far more environmentally friendly than other coffee pods.

Watch our pods decompose over 180 days:

Is composting better than recycling?

We think so! Did you know that the UK exports some 66% of its plastic for recycling, with no idea if it actually gets recycled?

Food contamination is an additional inevitable problem with recycling your coffee pods. For disposables designed for storing food, it makes sense to use materials that can be composted together with food, like in industrial composting.
