Growing up in New Zealand, grinding coffee was a weekend treat for Kurt Stewart. Trained as a chef, he was fascinated by the complexity of flavours found in speciality coffee and began roasting his own. First in a wok over his stove, then as a roaster in Notting Hill’s Coffee Plant, he started selling his first blend - Full Steam Espresso, on the streets of West Dulwich in 2004.
Kurt founded Volcano Coffee Works in 2010 with his childhood friend Olaf, and the company has now grown to over 20 members of staff. Though Kurt’s wok has been traded in for two state-of-the-art roasting sites (in Brixton and West Dulwich) and his coffee is enjoyed by customers across the globe, the recipe for our trademark Full Steam Espresso blend remains the same 14 years on, and Kurt still starts every day hand-roasting coffee.
